Service Members FAQ

What is SkillBridge?

The DoD SkillBridge program gives Service Members the opportunity to gain experience through internships, industry training and apprenticeship within the last 180 days of service.

What is the Career Skills Program (CSP)?
CSP is the Army’s name for their SkillBridge Program.
What are the requirements to participate?
  • Have 180 days of service or fewer remaining prior to discharge and have at least 180 days of continuous active service.
  • Obtain approval from unit commander
  • Acknowledge that SkillBridge participation can be terminated at any time by your service for mission requirements.
Can any rank apply?
Yes. Enlisted, Officers and Warrant Officers are all eligible.
Do all branches participate?
Yes. All branches of the DoD are included as well as the Coast Guard.
Can members of the Guard and Reserve Participate?
Yes. The requirements are the same, however, members of the Guard or Reserve will need to be active-duty during their entire SkillBridge. While that does complicate things, it is possible.
Why should I use BreakTurn?
BreakTurn is the only provider that specializes in connecting Service Members with the aviation industry. Our counselors expertise as both Service Members and civilian aviation professionals will give you the knowledge and guidance you need to be successful in transition.
What if I’m not currently serving in the aviation field?
All the more reason to connect with us. The aviation industry is looking for people with your drive, determination and work ethic. An internship can provide you an introduction to the industry. There are aviation jobs for every experience level and we strive to find something for every service member.
When should I apply?
You cannot apply for SkillBridge until you have an approved separation date, however, you should contact us between a year and two years from separation to help you come up with a plan to maximize the program. If you are inside a year, you should still contact us and we will do whatever we can to work inside your timeline.
Will I still get paid while on SkillBridge?
Yes! You will still be in the military the entire time you are working with an industry partner. You will be entitled to all pay and benefits as if you were still working at your last military job. In fact, you will even retain BAH at your current rate.
Can I get paid by the company while I am on SkillBridge?
No. SkillBridge is a joint DoD and Department of Labor program and since you will still be employed by the DoD the program specifies that partner companies are not allowed to pay you a salary. You can, however, get per diem, meals, and other expenses paid for by the company if you are required to travel and they would normally be paid to other employees.
Does the company have to be local?
No. The program allows participants to work anywhere in the world. There may be approval requirements for your service but you do not have to stay local.
How do I apply?
First, click on the “Service Members” page and fill out the contact information. After that, you will receive an email with a calendar invite to speak to one of our counselors. Our counselors will be able to answer your questions and tailor a program that will fit your goals. They will walk you through the process from start to finish.
What will this cost me?

That’s the best part. BreakTurn will never charge a Service Member a dime. Likewise, if our corporate partners would not charge an employee for it, then we do not expect a service member to have to pay for it.

If you elect to participate in a program that is centered on training or education then there may be a cost associated with that specific program. Most of the time this cost can be offset through VA benefits or other means. As an example, if you intend to get your airplane pilot ratings while on the program then there may be a cost associated with that specific aspect that can typically be covered by post-9/11 GI Bill benefits and your BreakTurn counselor can discuss these options with you.
